Thematic Analysis

The subjects addressed in TKM abound, making the identification of themes both interesting and exciting.
We will be exploring themes through text analysis of student-selected scenes portrayed in the novel, keeping in mind the four types of textual connections:  Text to Text, Inter-Text, Text to Self, and Text to World.  Below is a list of subjects that we will explore by composing thematic statements with discussions to follow.  The essential question we will be answering is: What is the significance of the scene and why did the author include it in the novel?

1.  Changing Gender Roles
2.    Deceptive appearances
3.    The Mob Mentality
4.    Addiction and the need to overcome it
5.    The coexistence of good and evil
6.    Growth & Maturity
7.    The Existence of Social Inequality
8.    The Importance of Moral Education
9.    Tolerance of Differences
